When an engine overhaul makes sense

With air-cooled engines, severe oil leaks often force action, regardless of mileage, as even the youngest examples are now almost 30 years old and their seals have hardened. Increased oil consumption is caused by increased wear, which is to be found in the cylinder heads and in the pairing of piston and cylinder. Another typical trigger for an extensive disassembly of these engines is the breakage of a head stud. The technical relationships in these engines are logical, and the damage patterns are always similar, so the necessary repair options are easy to assess.

Early water-cooled engines cause uncertainty with inherent defects like IMS bearings and Lokasil cylinders; here, specific investigations of the individual case are required to provide a sensible and economical recommendation.

Our approach to engine overhaul

To start, we recommend a joint assessment of the entire vehicle, both technically and economically. Especially with early models, history plays a key role in value retention. “Matching numbers” is quickly noted, but what about the engine’s complete periphery?

For all engine generations, we can only provide a recommendation on the procedure with a cost estimate after inspecting the entire vehicle.

In the second step, the engine is removed, cleaned, disassembled, and measured. At this point, we are able to quote a specific price for the agreed-upon work package, and you still have the opportunity to make key decisions on this basis. For example, should the clutch be completely replaced as a precaution, how important is the displacement increase, or should the gearbox remain untouched for now?

A key factor in the success of an engine overhaul is the installation and recommissioning with an extensive test run. Once all this has been successfully completed, you will receive your vehicle back, including photo documentation and a renewed joy of driving.

Engines for classics and modern models

Depending on the Porsche series, the requirements, typical damage patterns, and sensible measures for an engine overhaul differ significantly. An air-cooled engine with a magnesium block does not place particularly high demands on the engine design due to its power; nevertheless, this is precisely where the greatest difficulties occur during engine overhauls. The closely related engine block of the 993 Turbo, on the other hand, is highly inconspicuous; here, the problems, if any, are almost always in the wider periphery of the engine.
